What the Court Documents Say
Details about GTA 6's online mode have emerged from an unlikely source: a Glasgow Employment Tribunal. In January 2026, legal proceedings between Rockstar Games and the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) representing over 30 employees fired in October 2025 entered the public record, and journalists from People Make Games were able to review the filed documents in full.
Among the evidence submitted by Rockstar, internal Discord messages from dismissed employees referenced a playtest session involving 32 players. One message read: "They mentioned the large session we did today being difficult to do, but that was 32 players. Not sure how that was difficult." Another employee replied questioning why organising such a session was a problem given the scale of Rockstar's QA teams.
Rockstar's own legal filing described the messages as "highly confidential and commercially sensitive information relating to the content and features of an unannounced online service," adding that the company was "gravely concerned" the player count described as "a material feature of this new title" had been disclosed.
What Rockstar Has Said
Rockstar has not publicly addressed GTA 6's multiplayer plans in any official capacity. The studio's position in court is that the dismissed employees committed gross misconduct by sharing confidential information. The IWGB disputes this, alleging the firings were an act of union-busting. The Glasgow Employment Tribunal denied the workers interim relief in January, but a full trial is still pending.
What This Could Mean
For context, GTA Online currently supports 32-player sessions (30 active players, 2 spectators). If 32 is the planned cap for GTA 6 Online at launch, it would represent no increase over its predecessor though as multiple outlets have noted, this figure may apply only to specific session types or modes, and could be higher in others.
